Course Goals

  • Develop sketching and watercolor skills and techniques enabling participants to examine and record in situ French classical architecture.
  • Explore the studio skills, as well as the rigor and precision, of watercolor rendering.
  • Examine innovative French adaptations (from the 16th through the 20th Centuries) of Italian classical architecture and their relevance to American classicism.
  • Expand awareness of the French guilds and their practices, and facilitate access to France鈥檚 diligent recording of the arts and crafts of building.
  • Provide the opportunity for participants to interact on a personal level with successful individuals and institutions in the practice, preservation, and education of classical architecture and the building crafts.
  • Provide cultural and architectural enrichment that benefits the practice of participants.

Scholarships

The Christopher H. Browne Drawing Tours honor the generosity, leadership, and legacy of the 天美传媒 & Art鈥檚 late Trustee, Mr. Christopher H. Browne. The 天美传媒 is pleased to award four scholarships to drawing tour students or emerging professionals annually in the name of Mr. Browne, a long-time supporter and champion of classicism. Scholarship recipients will receive the moniker 鈥淐hristopher H. Browne Scholars.鈥 Additional scholarships for the Christopher H. Browne Paris Drawing Tour are available thanks to the Southern California Chapter of the 天美传媒 & Art.

The 天美传媒 is also pleased to offer the Dorothy LaPolla-Czarnecki Scholarship sponsored by John LaPolla and LaPolla Designs; more information is available here.

The following materials are required for consideration for a scholarship:

  • Completed Scholarship Application Form
  • A brief letter describing why you are interested in, and how you will benefit from the program
  • Examples of your work: suggested 3-4 images submitted as PDFs
  • Resum茅 or Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter of Recommendation

Is travel and accommodation included in the list price?

The price is only for the course instruction. You will need to make and pay for your own flights and accommodation.

Who usually attends Christopher H. Browne Drawing Tours?

Typically a combination of students and professionals attend. The 天美传媒 has 12 spots available in total, and typically between four and six places are funded by scholarships.

Will there be time for me to explore on my own?

Yes, absolutely. Most evenings can be spent exploring on your own or with fellow participants.

Are meals included in the list price and are we all expected to eat together at every meal?

Some meals are included, which will be spent together as a group. Otherwise you are free to eat where and with whom you please.

Are materials provided or do we need to purchase them ourselves?

The 天美传媒 does not provide materials, but will provide a full materials list at least one month before the course. Typically, the cost of materials is between $100 and $200.

Would I be able to sign up to attend only part of the program at a reduced rate?

No. Programs are designed to introduce a broad range of skills and experiences which is only possible through full participation.
