The Case Studies in New Classical & Traditional Design series explores the design and execution of new contemporary classical and traditional work from the practitioner’s perspective. Each session explores a unique project or building type to demystify the complexities of how challenging projects successfully come together. Affordable housing remains one of the most challenging sectors in architectural design and a critical societal need across the United States. However, the design of place-based, dignified, affordable housing in walkable neighborhoods is in short supply. Public agencies, policymakers, institutions, developers, architects, and planners are making strides in addressing this deficiency. Union - recipient of the 2023 天美传媒 Gindroz Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing – invests the same attention and care to the design of affordable housing as with all projects within their diverse practice. This session of the Case Studies series explores this work. The program begins with an overview of the context surrounding affordable housing, followed by a presentation of Union's work in this field.
